The Basics: Black & White reversal film
Back in 1999 Kodak’s people met with filmmakers, film professors, professional DPs and labs to ask about the use of those primordial, elegant recorders of light and dark: black and white reversal motion picture film stocks. The upshot? Kodak found out why those in the know love B&W reversal. Of special note? the film teachers declared that B&W reversal is THE BEST WAY TO TEACH beginning filmmaking. They love its look on screen, the simplicity of shooting and handling, its low cost. Most of all film teachers said B&W reversal film allows them to see what a student has really learned.
Experiencing Real Film on a Screen seems to be a basic innoculation against the disease of ugly and overlong imagery that comes from use of video camcorders. It’s easy and gratifying to retrace early film history with basic cameras and B&W reversal film. The flickering images on the silver screen encourage a new filmmaker’s curiosity, enthusiasm and aesthetic sense while helping to build self-control. You can promote basic filmmaking for its allure and discipline. Plus X and Tri X are here to stay in 16mm and Super 8. Teach a class, start a Flicker; there must be 100 ways to enroll new filmmakers.

Kodak itself and Dwayne’s Photo both process KODACHROME MOVIE FILM (K-14) in 25 foot Double 8mm daylight spools (Dwayne’s returns the reels.) Also, Super 8 50 foot cartridges (sound or silent), S8 200’ or 16mm rolls of Kodachrome. Do not be mislead: many labs process Kodachrome slides, use these for movies:

About two weeks turnaround time.Until recently, the Swiss lab’s work was very high quality. This month, we saw processing artifacts, especially when putting a lot of light through underexposed film onto video. (Little blue clouds on the left and occasional wavy blue scratches.) Filmmakers have met a wall of finger pointing at manufacture, not the lab, with the suggestion that the blue marks would not show if film was exposed perfectly and projected. This is not current usage as many filmmakers incorrectly underexpose reversal film expecting richer looking results, an old trick in neg. Passing-the-buck may work in politics but Kodak has a clear self-interest in Kodachrome, THE name brand for quality in film. We look forward to dialogue with Kodak’s technical experts and hope other filmmakers will work at maintaining a good climate by sending a clip back to the lab with a polite query. We will report when the lab’s quality control people respond.

Outdated stocks Shooting any film which is outdated carries some risk which is reduced if you know how the film was stored. Outdated color film cannot be expected to give normal color, but can sometimes give fun results for experimenters. Discoloration of outdated rolls is a greater problem with Ektachrome emulsions than with Kodachrome which is incredibly reliable even when outdated, as photographers know who have carried Kodachrome to the ends of the earth. Outdated B&W stocks if well stored are also less risk. I have personally taken home movies of family on Kodachrome that has been frozen 10 years past its date and had glorious results. TopFUJI’s SINGLE 8 FILM
In 1965 Fuji introduced its superb Single 8 system in Japan just moments before Kodak launched Super 8. Single 8 is 8mm wide with Super 8 image area and perforations and will play in Super 8 projectors. Its has an Estar base a type which Kodak is reintroducing in larger gauge stocks for strength and permanence. Fuji made a line of gorgeous cameras which can still be found. Single 8 had its own excellent cartridge shape (reel to reel, somewhat like an audio cassette--not compatible with coaxial Super 8 cartridges.) Fans have long argued that Single 8 is the better cartridge design for image steadiness (a pressure plate in the gate) and capabilities like full back winding (allowing great artistic possibilities for multiple exposure.)

Fuji’s Single 8 is only processed in Tokyo. Single 8 film is no longer sold with processing included. You must send in payment when sending the film to the Japan lab. Also, select regular processing or premium. Premium means sound striping added when the film is processed (not available later.)

Label your Fuji film "exposed amateur movie film for processing and return." Airmail it in a cardboard box with payment. Turnaround time about 3 - 4 weeks. Single 8 still has a devoted following, especially in Europe. In Japan we hear it's available in camera shops. ###
